Excel Practice
Carbon Cycle and Climate Change
- climate check - Climate Check is the EPA's carbon emissions inventory tool for schools.
It is a fantastic tool in the level of detail that it brings to the
process--it is as good as most professional tools that exist. You will need to download the excel program contained in item #2. Make
sure that you follow instructions precisely, especially those for enabling
macros.
- Using EOS-Webster data 1 |
Using EOS-Webster data 2
Use the EOS-Webster site to access climate modeling prediction data. The accompanying documents walk you through the process of downloading and "cleaning," and graphing the data. - Carbon Wedge Game - This game relates to the Socolow wedges that were mentioned in both Field Notes from a Catastrophe and An Inconvenient Truth. The game looks to be most appropriate for high school students.
- Mauna Loa Observatory -- includes access to the data on CO2

- Teaching Tips: Inquiry based learning
- Resources suggested by Duncan McCutchan
- Earth Observatory: Subcribe (free) to weekly remote images of earth phenomena with brief information about the images. I use this as a warm up for my classes. Images are archived and searchable.
- Investigating Earth Systems (produced by the American Geological Institute and published by Its About Time) Review copies can be requested from this publisher. Used copies, including teacher's editions, are available at amazon.com 10 volumes. Our Dynamic Planet, Climate and Weather, Astronomy, Energy Resources, Fossils, Materials and Minerals, Water, Oceans, Rocks and Landforms, and Soils.
- Earthcomm (produced by the American Geological Institute and published by Its About Time)
5 volumes. Earth's Dynamic Geosphere, Earth's Fluid Spheres, Understanding Your Environment, Earth System Evolution, and
Review copies can be requested from this series. Used copies, including teacher's editions, are available at amazon.com
- Earth Science Mcdougall-Littell 2006 This series gets my vote as the most "inquiry friendly" commercial science texts for middle school.
- New Hampshire Geology on the Web Many links to state resources and information.
- The Geology of New Hampshire: A Report by C.H. Hitchcock, NH State Geologist in 1878 This complete book is available as a downloadable PDF file. A remarkable piece of work done 130 years ago. Still useful.
- Hitchcock Atlas of New Hampshire Geology, by C.H. Hitchcock, NH State Geologist in 1878. I would love to see these original maps or their scanned images online at high resolution. How it was done before GIS, GPS, and JPEG.
- Franz Lanting Life: A Journey Through Time An artistic view of the evolution of our planet. This polished web slide show has striking images, related scientific information, a timescale, and original music by Phillip Glass.
- A slideshow featuring geological highlights of Duncan McCutchan’s trip to Iceland and Norway.
