TESSE Benefits
TESSE is designed to meet the varied needs of a diverse group of in-service
(current) and pre-service (future) Earth Science teachers at the middle and high school levels. Benefits to in-service teachers and benefits to pre-service teachers participating in the TESSE program include:
Benefits for In-service (Current) Teachers
1) 3-4 credits in the UNH Earth Science Topics course ( ESCI 895*). These are graduate level credits for individuals who have already completed a four-year degree;
2) $100/day stipend;
3) current content knowledge in Earth Sciences aligned with state standards;
4) strategies and best-practices for implementing Earth Sciences in the middle school and high school classroom;
5) partnership with a graduate student scientist during the Academic Year (ESST-1 primarily);
6) exposure to research techniques and topics in Earth System Science (ESST-2 primarily);
7) apply credits, certificate or build portfolio toward highly qualified status in Earth science.

Pre-service (Future) Teachers
Benefits to participating in the ten-week TESSE program include
1) 4-credit ESCI 795*;
2) $4000 stipend**;
3) authentic Earth Science research experience for pre-service teachers;
4) opportunity to apply personal research interests to best practice curriculum development;
5) current content knowledge in Earth Sciences aligned with state standards;
6) strategies and best-practices for implementing Earth Sciences in the middle school and high school classroom;
7) apply credits, certificate or build portfolio toward highly qualified status in Earth science.

Expectations for Pre-service Teachers
* Course credit is an available option for those interested in credit. Certificates of participation or other documentation can be prepared by request.
** Pre-service students from Dillard University and Elizabeth City State University will receive an additional $2,000 during the Academic Year for acting as Scientist-in-Residence with two in-service teachers.
