Transforming Earth Systems Science Education (TESSE)

TESSE Participant Expectations

Expectations for in-service teachers and pre-service teachers participating in the TESSE program include:

Expectations for In-service (Current) Teachers

1) daily attendance and full participation in the twelve-day, 9am-5pm course, including several mandatory evening programs and field trips;  
2) partner with a graduate student or pre-service teacher to develop best practice strategies for teaching Earth System Science in the teacher's classroom. The teacher will communicate regularly (1 to 2 times per week) with graduate student or pre-service teacher partner and there will be occasional coordinated visits to the teachers's school. The communications and school visits are designed to help the teacher plan, implement, and teach Earth Systems Science;
3) participation in two to four academic year programs/workshops at UNH with program senior personnel, in order to assess program success.

Expectations for Pre-service (Future) Teachers

1) daily attendance and full participation in the twelve-day, 9am-5pm course, including several mandatory evening programs and field trips;  
2) full-time commitment to the Research Immersion Experience, including research activities and regular meetings with mentor;
3) demonstration of satisfactory progress in Research Immersion Experience, as determined by program senior personnel and project mentor. Scheduling the Research Immersion Experience is flexible, but it must be eight-weeks in duration and begin before the Summer Course begins, and end before the start of the Fall Academic Semester.  Modest supplementary funds are available to offset costs for research supplies and travel.
